I think several categories change very often that make a domain hot or not and then you have the Long Term domain categories that are always hot.
Stay away from domain names that have low shelf life. These low shelf life domains are "Breaking News" type domains and most are "what’s going on now". With elections just around the corner in the US, I find it funny that some people think they are going to be rich because they hand register ObamaBiden2008forPresident.com etc. These domain names are simply Useless! Hurricane domain names, Useless! Virgina Tech Shooting domains, Useless etc! Do not waste your money on these kinds of domain names.
The domain names you do want to buy are in these categories and do not settle for an "extra word" type domain.
- Baby/Kids
- Wedding
- Legal
- Money (more lending type domains)
- School
Sticking in these 5 categories will provide you with long-term investments. The best advice that I can give you on "what’s good" in these categories… Ask yourself this:
Would I search for this on Google? ie. Trade School, Baby Store, Baby Themes, Wedding Pictures etc.
Do I buy things that relate to this term?
It’s really that simple. If people do not search for it, that shows their is no demand for the term. No demand = No value (in 99% cases). It is very likely that if you are searching for it, others are as well! If you are buying it, it’s likely others are as well. Confirm this with WordTracker but 9 times out of 10 if you search for it, others will as well.
Stay away from sticking "extra" words onto a term. In some cases "My" at the start will work, but really, it’s not premium if it contains any "extras". You can trick yourself all you want that you have a good domain by sticking extra words to a term, but who ever owns the "proper" or most common term, holds the premium. You want to own the Premium!
WeddingStore.com is the Premium. WeddingStoreMall.com is Not! YourWeddingStore.com is Not. WeddingStore.com is and will always be KING for that term! Again, do not try to kid yourself and think otherwise.
Stick with the winners and YOU will win!

I agree with you completely about the domains. But Wordtracker…ugh!

I guess I could of added other options as well. Google Trends, Google Insight, Google Adwords tool etc.
